Meet Captain Hal Gray
Captain Hal Gray is the owner and guide behind Hal Gray Guide Service LLC, offering private fishing charters in Charleston, SC. His passion for fishing began long before becoming a professional guide, growing up hunting and fishing in Virginia and spending as much time outdoors as possible. Rather than pursuing a traditional office career, Hal followed his lifelong passion by earning his captain's license and building a guiding business in the South Carolina Lowcountry. Today, he enjoys introducing anglers of all experience levels to Charleston's productive inshore waters, especially helping guests catch their first fish on a fly rod.
As an experienced Charleston fishing guide, Captain Hal specializes in fishing the tidal creeks, salt marshes, shallow flats, and Charleston Harbor that make the Lowcountry famous. He fishes year-round, adapting every trip to changing tides, weather, and seasonal fish movements to maximize each guest's success. Safety, professionalism, and personalized instruction are at the center of every trip, creating an enjoyable experience for beginners, families, and experienced anglers alike. His patient, laid-back approach has earned him a reputation as a trusted guide for inshore and fly fishing adventures in Charleston.
What sets Captain Hal apart is his commitment to teaching as much as catching fish. He enjoys sharing local knowledge, improving anglers' techniques, and helping guests gain confidence whether they're using light tackle or a fly rod. Every charter is customized to match the group's experience level and fishing goals, making each outing unique. With access to Charleston's diverse fishery and a passion for creating memorable experiences, Captain Hal delivers more than just a fishing trip—he provides an opportunity to experience the natural beauty and unique ecosystem of South Carolina's Lowcountry.
Your adventure takes place aboard a 2020 Beaver Tail B-2 Skiff, a shallow-water boat designed for navigating Charleston's marshes, tidal creeks, and flats. Powered by a reliable 60 HP Suzuki outboard, the skiff reaches speeds of approximately 30 MPH and comfortably accommodates up to five guests. Its shallow draft allows Captain Hal to reach productive inshore fishing areas that larger boats cannot access, providing anglers with excellent opportunities to target Redfish, Speckled Trout, Black Drum, and Sheepshead while enjoying a smooth, comfortable ride through Charleston's scenic coastal waters.
